IceBreakers Bath community at a Brekkie and Brew session

Quick FAQs

Do I need any experience?+

None at all. Most men who come have never done cold water dipping before. You go at your own pace and nobody is pressured to stay in longer than they want.

Is it really free?+

Yes. Completely free. No membership, no drop-in fee, no hidden costs. IceBreakers sessions will always be free to attend - that's a core part of what we are.

Is it only for men?+

Yes - our regular chapters are for men. This is intentional. Research consistently shows men open up more easily in men-only spaces. We create a safe, non-judgemental environment where that can happen.

What do I need to bring?+

Swim shorts, a towel, warm clothes to change into. A dryrobe® and a flask of something hot are highly recommended but not essential.

How do I start a chapter in my area?+

Fill in the form above and select "Starting a new chapter." We'll be in touch to discuss the process - we provide support, training and resources for new chapter leads.

Is cold water dipping safe?+

When done responsibly, yes. Our chapter leads are trained in cold water safety. We dip together so nobody is alone in the water. We build up gradually and always warm up properly afterwards. We assess local conditions before every dip to help keep the experience safe for everyone.

Do you swim?+

No - IceBreakers is not a swimming group. Most of our gatherings involve standing, wading or gently submerging in cold water up to the neck. Some men choose to fully immerse or dip their head, but this is always optional and done at their own risk. The focus is on presence, connection and shared experience - not endurance or performance. Some gatherings involve conversation, while others include moments of silence or reflection.

Do I need to be able to swim?+

IceBreakers is not a swimming group and many participants stay in shallow water where they can comfortably stand at all times. That said, cold water carries inherent risks and everyone joins at their own risk. If you are unable to swim, we strongly encourage you to speak with a leader before taking part so we can help you participate safely and comfortably. You should only enter the water to a depth where you feel safe, stable and in control.

How quickly will I feel the benefits?+

Most people feel a shift immediately - physically, mentally, emotionally. Expect some shock at first, followed by what many call an 'afterglow'. It gets easier over time.

I hate cold water - will I enjoy this?+

That's completely normal! You don't have to love the cold to love how it makes you feel afterwards. Give it a go - you might surprise yourself.
